we have the living church, as a rule to guide us. We say, this church instituted by Christ, to teach and guide men through life, has the right to change the Ceremonial laws of the Old Testament and hence, we accept her change of the Sabbath to Sunday. We frankly say, “yes”, the Church made this change, made this law, as she made many other laws, for instance, the Friday Abstinence, the unmarried priesthood, the laws concerning mixed marriages, the regulation of Catholic marriages, and a thousand other laws.

We also say that of all Protestants, the Seventh-day Adventists are the only group that reason correctly and are consistent with their teachings. It is always somewhat laughable to see the Protestant churches, in pulpit and legislature, demand the observance of Sundays of which there is nothing in the Bible.

With best wishes

This correspondence serves to re-iterate what had been said in the Catholic Mirror in !893:

“Reason and commonsense demand the acceptance of one or the other of these alternatives:

  • Either Protestantism and the keeping holy of Saturday
  • or Catholicity and the keeping holy of Sunday.
    Compromise is impossible.”

“ The teacher [of the Protestants i.e. the Bible] demands emphatically in every page that the law of the Sabbath be observed every week … the disciples of that teacher [the Bible] have not once for over three hundred years observed the divine precept … Proposing to follow the Bible only, as a teacher, yet before the world, the sole teacher is ignominiously thrust aside, and the teaching and practice of the Catholic church … adopted.”

“The Protestant world, at its birth, found the Christian Sabbath [Sunday] too strongly entrenched to run counter to its existence: it was therefore placed under the necessity of acquiescing in the arrangement, thus implying the Church’s [Roman Catholic Church] right to change the day, for over three hundred years. The Christian Sabbath [Sunday] is therefore to this day, the acknowledged offspring of the Catholic Church … without a word of remonstrance from the Protestant world.”

Jesus said—
But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. Matthew 15:9

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy, for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day, wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it” Exodus 20:8-11.

This was not a Jewish ceremonial law, for the Sabbath began at creation when there were no religions and no churches, just human beings.
