Clothes can be prepared and checked in the wardrobe and shoes polished and put away. Even if you will have the Sabbath on your own at home, it is still a special day between you and God that you will want to prepare for.
Then there are practical things to plan for. When you go on holiday, can you get a booking so that you do not have to travel on the Sabbath? Will the hotel take you a day later? When can you fill up the car with petrol so that you do not have to buy any on the Sabbath? |
| How will you explain to family that you might not want to share in the usual family activities now you know it is the Sabbath day. It is easiest to be consistent, so that you do not get involved in parties, shopping trips, days out, sports, and the many other things that happen on Sabbath. They will then see your true loyalty towards God. What about the tradesman the delivers on Sabbath - can you change the day? |
| What will you tell the place where you work about the Sabbath? What about the Friday night part of work in the winter? There is a hymn that says 'trust and obey for there's no other way'. And that is right. Even though you are fearful about your employment, God will honour your obedience to him, as many can testify. He has worked out exams, crops, and finance, but only to those who obey with all their hearts and are prepared to put all their trust on him. |

Then on Friday - those last minute preparations. Maybe you might want to buy some special fresh flowers to put in the house, look out a different table cloth to keep specially for Sabbath, or use the best china. Or wash the car, cut the grass and sweep the paths, and give the house a once over as if a visitor were coming. |

One home always smells of polish and freshly made bread. This is the time to put away all the newspapers, business papers, half finished knitting, ironing piles, toys, hobbies, and signs of the work of the week. Make sure all the washing is off the line before Sabbath.
