Once the first change has been made it becomes easier to change the whole meaning of the Sabbath.
As people try to make it fit their way of life, it becomes less and less specific, although many recognise the benefits of keeping a Sabbath.
The commandment in its full context does not appeal to those who find it too literal. It is more theologically fashionable today to spiritualise away the things of the Bible, and so the Sabbath commandment which has
- real people in it
- real work,
- real days and a
- real rest day
does not fit today’s intellectual mind. It is too literal and would have to be obeyed literally. This would be too simplistic and childlike - it would also cut across today’s lifestyles. And so it is tampered with. |
