are part of God’s plan for all people to be one in Him. The Sabbath is for 24 hours and we all have 24 hours in a day. It is an entirely fair gift to all people, to be enjoyed by all in the East or in the West.
As many people move around the world living in different countries among different people, there is considerable social tension and suspicion. Someone’s food smells different, or their skin is a different colour, or they wear different clothes. |
On the Sabbath for 24 hours all these differences are levelled out. All are equal for 24 hours. God said that His house was to be a house of prayer for all people. Isaiah 56:1-7. It is a day when all can praise God together and enjoy one another’s company without prejudice or racism or suspicion, as we are all of one blood and God is our Father.
On the Sabbath the Lord can gather the outcasts, the lonely, the forgotten, the single, the foreigners in our land, those with a disability, and the underprivileged. He wants us to see ourselves in the world as a family. When we live like this on Sabbath it can influence all our dealings with one another during the week and we grow into being the children of God. |
 |
It must be remembered that this is a blessing of the Lord and cannot be legislated for. It has to come from the heart. Each of us can feel one with God on the seventh day of rest. Therefore the rest from social tension can be ours on the seventh day, whether we empty the bins or farm the land or work as a consultant in a hospital, or are employed as a lawyer. |

The Sabbath commandment which says “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy” cannot be kept just because it makes sense. It is not something devised by reason and cannot alone appeal to reason. It is a gift of God. The week is not able to be determined mathematically or astronomically and so the Sabbath cannot be computed by human beings. God made it, He blessed it, and set it apart for holy use - and then He gave it to us for the benefit of us all.
The other nine commandments are somehow innate in us and we deep down know that we should be good to our parents and not tell lies and so on, but the Sabbath is a divine command. |
We have to become aware of it and then convicted of it and then step out to observe it. It is not instinctive. Without it we would all work around the clock to get everything done. Then comes total mental and physical breakdown and exhaustion. This was never in God’s plan.
God gave us this day of blessing. The Sabbath is the evidence of our special Creation. If we keep it we acknowledge that we had a good beginning we know that |
